One of my friends has a Facebook group and she posted the question of why would you have your child and then inclusive environment or why would you not. This was my answer.

I have a very different experience. My son has been fully included since kinder, actually in preschool as well. It’s definitely a choice for each family, as you both mentioned. Why we choose inclusion is so that he can be surrounded with same age peers. They are great models for him and he teaches them so much. I’ve been told by many families how much they appreciate my son in their child’ classes. In life we all have to live and work together. A fully inclusive classroom mimics life.
Although there are pros and cons to everything. His SPED team is really fabulous and I meet with the team regularly. To see how he’s doing and make sure his paras are up-to-date with strategies on keeping him as engaged and up to speed as possible.
I truly believe there will be many kids growing up in inclusive environments who support/hire and advocate for our kids when they are adults.
My son has strengths and struggles just like them, only more severe of course. They know him as the silly guy who knew how to read before he could speak. Who could do his math facts way before they could but has such trouble following word problems and complex problems. They see all of him because they have grown up with him. And many of them so appreciate him.
