The kids and I were exploring an amazing beach/rock area in the waterway/marina area on the other side of the pool area near where our room is. (we moved from our AirBnB and now are staying in a resort/hotel down the street... which is another stressful story that I will not bother to share) It was absolutely beautiful, as you can see by the pictures. We had to coax Ian over there because it was a bit tricky to get little area we were as we had to climb over a rocky bit and walk a couple feet down to it but it was worth it. Once in, the sand was surreally soft in the water. To me, it almost felt as if we were walking on clouds.
As the three of us soaked in this new sensory experience, Lila climbed up to explore a tide pool area just near us. She called for me to check it out. It was super close so I climbed up to a gorgeous natural pool of of beautiful pink Conch Shells. Her and I were marveling over these creatures as Ian began to walk further out into the water. At this point the water was probably just at his waist. A bit earlier, when he was up to his mid-thigh I began to get a bit nervous and suggested he come back a bit further and sit down. That seems like his favorite thing to do at a waters edge so I thought this the perfect spot. Lila pointed out that he was finally exploring going in further than he usually does so we should let him go. And I agreed so I climbed up to check out the shells.
As I looked over at him, he seemed to be almost walking towards something in an almost trance like state. Walking with a completely different gait than usual. I found it a bit strange so I called to him to stop and come back. He looked back at me casually and turned back to face his "caller" again and kept walking. At this point I was screaming at him, STOP NOW, IAN STOP! He literally kept walking as if he could not hear me. And with a kind of confidence and stride that I'd never seen from him. At this point I realized he was going in too deep.
His next step was a drop-off ground beneath his feet in the water. His shoulders were under fast and his head started going under. He began to struggle and was instantly snapped out of his trance. I ran to the water and jumped in after him. At this point, I was almost hysterical. As I connected with his body, I wrapped my arm under around his chest to keep his head above water. At the same time my feet slipped as I reached the drop. I had to swim to keep us both up. At that instant, I knew he was safe but it was almost like an out-of-body experience.
This is not like him at all, at least lately. He's become more aware of my calling him and often comes back when wandering. Also, generally, he doesn't walk into water this deep. He has a time or two when we are playing at a pool that he's familiar with but not with this kind of determination.
Now, reflecting back and putting these last few days together, I'm wondering if this is not a result of the FMT. It's almost like he was taking on the qualities of another person for a few moments. Will be interesting to see where this leads.
