I might have posted earlier about moving Lila from Richmond Street School in El Segundo to WISH in our neighborhood. It is clear that as tough of a decision it was to move her, it was definitely the best one for our family.
One of the things that was most important to us, besides the small class size and the constructivist approach to learning, was the inclusive model. This was important so that Lila, and her peers, would be open and accepting of whatever abilities Ian might be struggling with. For them to be accepting of children of all levels of function.
Turns out one of Lila's best friends has to be one of the sweetest little girls I've met. Unfortunately sweet Abbie is struggling with Cerebral Palsy. She has very few verbal words and she can not walk without assistance. But she has the most warm and loving energy about her. And Lila can see it all. She is so close to sweet Abbie that for the last week, while Abbie was out sick, Lila would come home just about every day and say how much she missed her at school. "Everything I do makes me think of Abbie " she said by Friday.
We went by Abbie's house today to drop off a little something Lila had for her. It's just warms my heart to watch them together. Lila has such a sense about people. Truly a gift to cherish.
And so interesting the experiences her mother and I find we have in common with our sensitive children. She also is so happy to make it through a cold in the comfort of her own home. Abbie also struggles with asthma.
In addition to sweet Abbie, there are so many other fabulous things about WISH. We had her parent teacher conference last week and that was terrific. She's doing so well and really enjoys school. Her teacher is so lovely and extremely switched on to education today. Mrs. V totally gets how Lila learns and what level she's at in all subjects. She explained how they break the class in groups for differentiated instruction to meet all levels of learning. So nice to hear. Keeping her engaged and excited about learning. We can't wait for Ian to experience WISH, if it's appropriate for him when he's ready! Would be nice to not have to go through that search.
