Distance learning has been quite a learning process for me. And a test in patience, every single day. Yesterday was an amazing day, one of our best. We had our practice test for math and he rocked it in such an amazing way. His favorite subject is math as he's been obsessed with number for a couple of years now. And we have worked so diligently on learning. We went from the beginning of 2nd grade with him having no concept of what a zero was, to him being able to do his addition, subtraction, multiplication and division facts with automaticity. Quite a road travelled with a lot of bumps! The trickiest thing for him to do is be able to keep them all straight. There are many times when we are doing addition and he'll multiply or vise versa. But if we are on just one for a lesson, he's pretty good. Also, if the facts are in a certain format in one of the programs we use called Freckle, he can rock through them most often with a 85-90% accuracy, even though they are all mixed together. I'm going to continue to explore why this works for him with his docs and therapists.
Back to the point of the post. Yesterday, we had done the practice test, which was not modified in any way and included a variety of problems and terms and he aced it! I might have had to read the problem to him for a couple and ask what numbers to write down but he knew them and told me what to do, multiply or divide, etc. I always cover the multiple choice answers because if I don't, he'll just start rattling them off and not focus. We cover the answers, he does the problem and then I uncover and he chooses the right one. It was amazing how well he did and how he focused! Then we had the volcano science experiment and he loved it! It was such a mess but was so fun! We had a fabulous day!
When it came to taking the test today, I was having issues signing in and finding the Assesment so his teacher did a breakout room with us to work on getting in. It was a tech issue, like we have every day during this crazy time. Once in, she was reminded that she wanted to shorten the test for him and asked me to wait. But I asked her if we could just take the same test everyone else was doing as he had done so well yesterday. She agreed. But of course, when we finally got into the test, he was lost focus wise. With a "chase" and a "jump and fall down" ending in a "sniff and disgusting" when he finally got back to his ball seat, we began the test. And it was so frustrating! The format was mostly not multiple choice. It was a bunch of way more complex sentences which required us to write out the answers. The first problem he did great with but most of the others were just too complex of questions and required multiple answers. And his focus was all over the place. We were working on the last problem, which was just a subtraction problem with borrowing/regrouping. He was doing great with it but then got stuck on 15-8, which he totally knows in all other instances. But he just kept throwing out guesses.
And then we got to his spelling test. Which he rocks at as well! He's an excellent speller. All of the questions where he had to choose the correct spelling, he did great with. It was the samples of sentences asking which one has an incorrectly spelled word where he just guessed again. But when I asked him to type out all of his spelling words from the week, he got every single one correct. And when I finally got him to stop and look at the sentences, he did finally see one misspelled word but the concept was just too much to consider. So, again, didn't ace it as he should have.
