I'm lying next to my sweet boy right now. Slept with him last night as well so I could check his blood sugar in the night.
He had a very strange incident yesterday morning at 4am. Lila came in to our room and said Ian was throwing up. I rushed to the bed they share and saw that he was covered and laying face down in it. We pulled him out and brought him to the shower. He was shaking and his hands were shriveled, super cold and white as a ghost. Meaning he must have been there in it for a while. She had gotten up to use the bathroom but maybe didn't notice before she left.
Mike was trying to help out while I washed him up in the shower. He seemed really out of it and we were scared so I asked him to call an ambulance. It was clear he needed to head to the ER and there was no way I was going to drive him. When the paramedics and fire crew arrived we got him out of the shower and he was still in the same condition. No longer vomiting but all the rest the same. They went through their process of questions and checking him.
The older paramedic who seemed to be in charge was a bit awkward as we were getting prepped to head out of the house. Made me feel like Ian was just any other kid with a stomach flu and we were overreacting. I was so conflicted as to whether to bring him in or not. I just lost it emotionally and said maybe we should just stay home. Mike and Glenda (our fabulous neighbor) reminded me this it's best to be sure. So we got him into the ambulance. The skeptic paramedic rode with us in the back a d continued to be being quite cynical saying "Wait til you see our bill," etc. Really frustrating!
Ian seemed to be getting a bit better. Hands still cold and shriveled but at this point he was saying, "I need help please" and trying to get his belt off. Even handed me back the iPad and said "No" which is unheard of for him.
We were placed in a room as soon as we arrived. His hand warmed slightly but vomited again as the crew was getting the info from me. Mike arrived while this was all happening. I was able to get him to watch the iPad a bit while they did his vitals again. He had a low grade fever and was just out of it. I was able to get a pill in his mouth to help with the vomiting. And they let him drink water which made him feel better.
As we sat there, he seemed to be getting more stable. The ER attending was very liberal with his care. Didn't see an IV was neccassary just had him monitored for a while. His hands came back to normal, he finally had interest in the most favorite iPad and they suggested we take him home and monitor him there.
Seems like it was a stomach flu but pretty extreme, as is most things with this sweet boy. But the trick with that is for the first time in his life, he did not want to eat or drink a thing besides water. I've not yet dealt with this since he was diagnosed with Hypoglycemia. The stress of that has made for a trying weekend. We've had to force him to eat frosting and bits of honey squeezed in his mouth. As I did at 2 this morning. I'm finishing this post at school where he just tested 79. Pretty good since he did eat a banana and two bites of his egg sandwich this morning. I asked his teacher to give him a cookie to bring it up since they are not having lunch for another hour and a half. I'll continue to watch him but seems like he's coming back :-)
