the Brain Balance presentation, more possibilities for that magic bullet

My special needs moms group is amazing! Debra, the woman who really began the group 2 years ago, does it right. When we get together it's like a melding of great mom minds. We share what we've seen, tried, theories, frustrations. Really rewarding to share with so many while at the same time be able to get suggestions from others.

On the 5th we had the 2nd of our speakers series. A few of us get together setting up wine, cheese, crackers and nibbles for before hand to make it complete. This one was at Brain Balance in Brentwood. Everyone in this biz seems to explain it similarly... like this is it... the reason why your child has problems and the way to "fix" them. And we all sit there with our whole body "salivating" with goose bumps when they tell us how what they can do for our child will make such a difference in their lives. It just makes sense to them and we are all so hopeful, we listen and try to figure out how we can work it into our children's already filled up schedule and how we'll pay for it.

I had asked quite a few questions so they actually called me, and two other moms (the organizer included) to come by the next day with our children to have the man who spoke to us, the founder Dr. Melillo, meet our children to do a quick pre-assessment. Besides being one of the founders of BB, he has written a couple books about the method.

Was interesting. I kind of was prepared for the conversation. After thinking about it, they work with children from 4 to 17. Developmentally, Ian is probably closer to between 2-3 so he's not ready for something like what they do. Which is what Dr. M said. He agreed that his advanced skills in reading and spelling def show that his left brain is much stronger than the right. He felt that he'd be ready for the program in a year. Which is kind of good because we can't afford it, financially or schedule wise, right now. What he suggested was to read the book they gave to us at the meeting and follow some of the suggestions in it to help mature his eye focus and his overall vestibular development.

So off I went to add another program to the list and ponder how it might be "the one" to aide in quickening his development.
