A very long and unnerving night.

The brief on last night is it was pretty awful! Started out okay. Besides the pulse-ox monitor going off every half to hour, I slept for a few hours, right through the midnight feed and, I guess, through the late evening breathing treatment. Then he woke up around 2am. I thought I'd try to breast feed him so I asked the nurse to help to get him on my lap. As he did the Friday evening, he goes on for 1 minute and then off and no interest at all for more. Quite strange behaviour considering he nursed for over an hour when we got up to the PICU.

While he was laying there and I was trying to get him back on, he was waving his arm around a bit. We didn't have much light on but just enough to see him. All the sudden, I see blood all over his face and body. Then I look at my shirt and just about everything around me and there's blood everywhere! For a minute or two, I couldn't figure out what it was, but was thinking the worst, as you could imagine. So lucky the nurse was there. She noticed the IV had fallen out. She quickly grabbed some gauze and called for another nurse to come in and help.

The pain ensues from that point. Twice they proceeded to try to stick him another IV without success. Of course while he's screaming his head off and writhing around. He was so wasted from that they thought they'd give him a break. I tried to also get some rest. But about an hour or so later, another nurse came in to try for a third time. She was the IV expert on that shift. And she did get it on the first try, but unfortunately had forgotten the tape. In the split second I tried to grab some from the rolling cart and came back she'd lost it. He was miserable!

They decided they didn't need it after all and that they could just do his last two doses of anti-biotic via a shot... super fun ;-( They gave him a break and also had to await the pharmacy to send it up.

Overall, he was pretty upset off and on all evening. And, as I mentioned, had pretty much lost interest in nursing, which of course bothered me. Especially because he wasn't tracking or really looking at me either. Not sure if all of this behaviour is just post-op typical or what.

His fontanelle was definitely less full. I feel it's actually going the opposite way, it feels cavernous compared to what i remember Lila's feeling like, and definitely compared to what it had felt like before. The other trippy thing is that you can feel the separation of his skull. Probably due to the fluid build up and the bones separating. So freaky! I definitely posed the questions to the nurse and she said she'd call the docs.

So, no sleep for Mommy and I'm feeling like I'm on the verge of getting sick as well. Isn't that always the case! I asked Mike to stay with Ian tonight. The last few nights have been pretty much non-existent sleep. Not to mention weeks before that. He brought Lila up with dinner and we did the 'ol switch-a-roo. Hence, my time spent updating the blog.

We'll see how tomorrow goes for him. Really hoping the strange behavior will resolve itself in the next couple of days.

Funny thing... I ran into one of the Pulmonologists that helped us last time we were in the ER. She reminded me it was Memorial Day. Not sure what that means but it seems Ian like's to spend his holidays in the hospital. ;-)
