Finally able to ride to school!

We started off the New Year back in school having so much fun getting there!

We’ve had this tricycle for probably about  two years now. At first he didn’t want to get on. Then he would go for a short time but he would fight his way off  after a short time. He never wanted to wear his helmet. The helmet that, after searching the globe for one that would fit his extremely large head, I finally had to customize a XXXL by filing down part of the foam and taking out the internal skeleton. It still doesn’t fit perfect but better than nothing. It took patience, lots of breathing and coercion, determination and music to get him open to be able to ride to school. It was so well worth it!

Wed and Thurs of this week, he happily got on the bike, allowed me to strap him in and put on his helmet. As soon as the music began to play, he joyfully rode himself to school :) Of course it's a almost a mile so I had to push a good lot of it but he was pedaling the rest of the way on his own. And that bike is heavy!

So heart-warming to see him proudly riding by his friends and teachers while they cheer him on with encouragement and tell him how cool his bike is! Of course there was one neigh sayer who shouted, "That bike is weird!", but that's life. I just shared, as I often do, that his brain and his body works different so he needs a bike that can accommodate him. And I added that this is quite a miracle because when he was born they told us he may never walk :) Ian is tough and works hard.

Our sweet boy does everything in his own time. Most often not on a "regular schedule" but the extremely important reminder to us is eventually he gets there. And when those moments arrive they are so much sweeter than anything else! It’s a family effort. Lila is an amazing big sister. He’s continually trying our patience, like most children... but x100 ;) Teaching us all to step away when we need to, breathe more and persist. Love will lead the way through all challenging times.
