Adapted vs. Accommodated vs. Modified Curriculum

Just recently got clarification on this topic which is such a bummer. I had a friend who had been such a stickler about it for years but I never knew why. She actually moved schools to maybe get another chance for Accommodated for her son because I guess it wasn't working at the current school. I had breakfast with some parents who I've recently become close with, as we spent time together in Japan. And when the subject came up, they clarified it for me. They have a daughter on the Spectrum in 8th grade and a neurotypical son in 5th, with my daughter. Accommodated means they make accommodations for your child if they are able to keep up with their peers having those in place. Such as getting extra time on a test, allowing for multiple choice rather than essay questions, etc. (That's if I'm understanding it correctly) Modified means still allowing for your child to be educated but at their level, which means they are not up to their peers... which means when it comes to graduating high school, it's not going to happen :(

This is a big decision to make right about now in Ian's education. He's in 1st grade. He can read much better than almost all of his peers in the whole grade and he can spell better than them all. He definitely is typing better than most 3rd graders. His math is coming along, albeit slow. He's now really excited to "Do more plus mommy" as he asks me to do at night and early morning (the other day at 4:30 AM)

Question is, will he be able to keep up and will this be more of a struggle than allowing him to learn at his own pace, which might be higher in some subjects, much lower in others? Well, I'm going to give it a shot, of course, to keep up for now and see how it goes. As I did when I used to drive around Westwood while he was in the NICU or just admitted for another round of Pneumonia or something, I picture him walking the streets near UCLA looking "too cool for school" while he's attending. That's my dream for now and I'm sticking to it! http://www.cae.ucla.edu/ is the program I'm looking at... keep him close to mommy :)
