How old is he?

A question I posted to my M-cm group and something I think about and encounter often the older Ian gets.

I'm embarrassed to say I lied about Ian's age yesterday. Would love shared experiences and thoughts on this.

We r on vacation and I've  spent 2 glorious weeks with my amazing Ian and his remarkable sister Lila. Ian is 4 and doing so well but still quite delayed. He spent most of the first 2 years of his life in the hospital. In top of M-cm, PMG, hydrocephalus, brain bleeds, major lung issues, etc. with all that he's walking great, talking but not so clear and perseverates quite often and overall developmentally more like a 2.5 rather than a 4 year old.

Quite remarkable to me and my family and every doctor and therapist. But to the general public, little kids especially, they ask what's wrong with him. That is if I say he's 4.

Yesterday I didn't feel like telling my usual story of, "he's had a rough start and spent lots of time in the hospital". So I just said he's 3. And there was no questions. Only comments were from the older girls saying how amazingly cute he is!

I decided to talk to my daughter. I explained what I did and asked her opinion. Her response was funny. She said we could say he's 6 and short and has trouble speaking. After all he can spell and read better than a 6 year old. Or we could say he's 1 and very tall for his age and quite advanced ;)

So just wondering how u all deal with this.
