We finally did the pulmonary sleep study and it was completely frustrating! Days before we had been watching his saturation and been excited to think we could finally be off of oxygen because he was doing so well. He kept pulling his cannula off his face, which rips his little cheeks up. One night he did it again and he was satting so well (baseline of 98-100) that we kept him off all night. The whole night he looked great! And his cheeks got a rest.
I was so excited when the day came to do the study but nervous because the night before he was a little off on his sats. And then that morning, he was as well, just between 96-98. These numbers are usually fine for most but I know him and that wasn't his baseline. I "starved" and deprived him of sleep (which is what they require) anyway and called the clinic. They said to bring him in and the doctors would make the decision whether to go ahead with it or not. So I did and they said to go with it.
In the office he was reading 98 which was good. As soon as we had him downstairs and hooked up to the tech's machines he was reading 94! I told them that was definitely not his baseline and asked them to check their machine, and check with the doc. They did and he said to go ahead. I guess I had deprived him of sleep, food and drink so I just did it. I watched as the numbers didn't go up. They kept coming in and adjusting the oxygen. They had him up to a liter and still was 95.
So we finished and they told me the basic of what they did. I was so frustrated and confused. What was going on with him? I was thinking my monitor at home was problematic and maybe he's got more lung issues. Tried to talk to the doc but his office was closed by the time we were done. Ian seemed fine, little groggy from the meds but other than that, same as usual. So I took him home and continued to check him myself. His sats were the same, always above 97. I called Lifecare Solutions to see if it was our machine and they assured me it was not.
The nurse emailed me the next day saying we need to put him up to 1 liter. And I corresponded with her to try to figure it all out. We don't always connect on the same plane. I often feel as if she thinks I'm trying to control the process and undermine their progress. Anyway, there's no answer, she said to just go with it and we agreed that I would set up an overnight study to see what was really going on. I've got an appt with Dr. Platzker next week to see what he says.
