So I'm just throwing this out there. We've been going between names but pretty set on most likely calling him Ian. Mike has always liked that name, for years even, and actually mentioned it to me when we were first dating. It's nice and short, to go with our long last name, and has the balance of normal but just unique enough so he'll probably be able to find an occasional license plate or mug with his name on it but might not have 5 other Ian's in his first grade class.
I looked it up again this morning. The origin is Scottish, which is okay because although we don't know a lot about Mike's family, Abercrombie seems to also be of Scottish decent. Turns out Ian is the Scottish form of John. Is this a good thing, not sure but interesting tid bit. It also means, God is gracious. Not sure if this is of any importance to us.
Really the only other name we threw around was Liam (besides my Mom offering up Ole but I'll explain later ;-) One of the reasons we kind of nixed Liam was there just seems to be too many out there whom we're aware of. One of my friend Marla's twins has the name as does a couple of other kids from in the MOMs Club. I also have another friend, Gayle, who has a son with the name who is probably in his teen years now. None of these a "show-stopper" but just things to consider.
Another thing we are considering is how it goes with Lila. Whereas Liam & Lila, both L's and same amount of letters, might be kind of cute, are they too sing-songy together? They would both have the same first/last initials, which are LA (we liked that because it's where they were born). Of course this means they could share monogrammed towels... an important point ;-)
Ian and Lila still sound good together but are probably different enough to not be goofy.
Of course, Liam is of Irish decent, and today is St. Patrick's Day, so that's something to consider if he comes today. It also holds the meaning of Resolute Protector, which I dig.
We'll see how it goes. Most likely his middle name will be Wesley, which is Mike's. Has a nice ring to it. Mike wasn't super into the idea, due to his modesty, but it's really the only thing that we both agreed on that sounded nice and had some connection to the family. Lila has my Mom's middle name, Rae, so we had to kind of go with something from his family to be fair (Rae is also middle name to one of my Sister's, her daughter, a bunch of cousins, etc. definitely popular in the family). Mike's Dad is Robert David, both we're not super fond of... too popular (although I have two brothers with the name David!) All the Grandfathers names didn't work for us either, (although Mike digs Willis or Wiley which were two of his Dad's Dad's names... William Willis Wiley Abercrombie, I wasn't going for any of them) So I guess Wesley it is!
What's the Ole story you ask? We'll naturally my family has to throw out their thoughts on the subject, which is totally normal and fun. My Mom had gone through a few names here and there. She would send him little gifts with new names of them. She eventually landed on her Norwegian Uncles and just past Oscar, she ended on Ole and it kind of stuck. From then on, all packages and references to our boy were Ole. It's gotten to be kind of a joke in the family. Even Lila mentioned to one of my nurses when introduced (who also strangely enough shares the name, although with a different spelling Ollie) that Ole was her little brother's name! Not so good ;-)
